Transplant Expenses Included and Excluded in a Health Cover
Off course, it also depends on the condition of the patient and the hospital they have chosen. The sensible thing to do is to take an insurance policy so it doesn't affect your financial situation if the need arises for a transplant.
If the recipient is a policy holder, most expenses to the sum insured are covered. But an organ transplant involves two people, donor and recipient. In a donor's case, even if he has a health insurance policy, expenses may not be reimbursed since this is not a health condition for him. Some companies only cover the inpatient hospital expenses of a donor.
Expenses incurred on organ harvesting and surgery is admissible under organ donor coverage.
Some insurers provide the donor cover to the extent of the sum insured. Then, there are products that do not cover organ donor expenses as part of the main cover, but offer it as an add-on. Pre- and post-hospitalisation of the donor as well as screening expenses are not covered. Any complications arising consequent to harvesting, will also not be payable.
It is advised to have a thorough look at the policy before taking it up to know what all will be covered for both the donor and the recipient.
