Pancreatic Cancer, Risk Factors and How to Deal With It HDFC Life

May 16, 2018

There are two kinds of pancreatic cancers namely exocrine tumors and endocrine tumors. In about 95 per cent of the cases the cancer is exocrine in nature. There are several risk factors that lead to pancreatic cancer; among which some can be avoided while the others are inevitable. However, it has also been noticed that people showing even more than one risk factors do not have the disease while the ones who dont exhibit any of the risk factors bear the pancreatic cancer.

Avoidable risk factors

Use of tobacco Studies has found that active smokers are more prone to pancreatic cancer as compared to non-smokers. The risk of getting cancer increases double fold for people consuming tobacco in any form.

Obesity Being overweight can also lead to pancreatic cancer. As per researchers obese people are about 20% more likely to develop pancreatic cancer.
Exposure to certain chemicals  At workplace one might get exposed to certain chemicals that imbalance the basic makeup of pancreas thereby causing cancer.

Unavoidable risk factors

Old age With growing age people get more prone to this disease. It has been observed that two-thirds of the patients are at least 65 years old.

Gender More often than not it has been reported that men are an easier victim of this deadly disease than women.

Family history The Inherited Genetic Syndrome can lead to pancreatic cancer as this syndrome can pass from parent to child making her / him more susceptible to pancreatic cancer.

Diabetes People suffering from type 2 diabetes are also quite prone to pancreatic cancer.

Cirrhosis of the liver - People with the history of heavy drinking or liver damage are also susceptible to this form of cancer.
Stomach problems Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori), which happens to be the ulcer causing bacteria; might also increase the risk of getting pancreatic cancer.

How to deal with the inevitable

Dealing with cancer is not an easy thing; but in absence of any monetary back up the fight becomes more fearsome.
