Health Insurance Guide for Disabled Persons

March 11, 2019
Healthcare insurance is an important factor for financial coverage and therefore, must be accounted for whenever possible. The rising costs of healthcare are a gnawing issue and the inflation is a very important factor that counts for it. In fact, inflation is one of the most important factors that have affected the healthcare costs in India. In the event of a health-related issue or emergency, in the absence of a sufficient coverage, extreme stress is put on the finances of a family. In such a case, the reserved finances for a family’s important goals have to be spent on the treatment of the patient. Therefore, it is very important for you to have a significant health insurance plan in place so that the basic savings corpus remains unaffected in the event of a health-related contingency.

When it comes to choosing the health insurance plan, especially for disabled persons, there are certain factors that must be kept in mind. Traditionally speaking, disabilities have been treated as a risk-zone in terms of insurance and therefore, previously, disabled persons were not entitled to health-risk coverage. This was generally true in the era of governmental insurance control and owing to the limited outreach of the governmental agencies, the ground for any innovative health insurance guide for disable persons was very limited. However, after the early 2000s, when the government opened the doors for private insurers, a range of options was thrown open and this also meant a proper coverage for disabled persons as well. The age of innovative customer-focus was here and therefore, there were lots of options that were made available. In the healthcare insurance segment for disabled persons however, the options remained limited and still are. There are two broad categories that define the health insurance for disabled persons in India.

Depending on whether the disability that a person is suffering from is congenital (i.e. by birth) or accidental, various health insurance providers offer healthcare coverage scopes. Generally speaking, if the disability is congenital i.e. in the event of a person being disabled from birth, the insurance providers do not offer any healthcare coverage. This means that persons who are suffering from congenital disabilities are not eligible for healthcare coverage in the general sense of the word. However, for persons who have become disabled on account of an accidental occurrence are treated as regular customers when to comes to purchasing a health insurance plan. Therefore, such persons who were not born with a disability but became disabled due to any accidental occurrence are equally eligible for a healthcare coverage as is provided by the various insurance providers. There is a clear set of medical tests and documentation at the time of policy purchase, which must be duly followed and all the details pertaining to the disability must be divulged.
