7 Reasons Why Income Tax Refund Could Be Delayed

7 Reasons Why Income Tax Refund Could Be Delayed
June 05, 2017
One of the things that every tax payer who regularly files income tax returns looks forward to is the income tax refund, if found eligible. However, income tax refunds are not always on time and could be delayed due to several reasons. You should probably check your refund status online and know the reason for delay. Here are some common reasons why your return could be delayed.

  1. Manual E filing

Manual E filingis the process of filing returns and then mailing the acknowledgement to the ITR office in Bangalore for completing the verification. If you have filed your returns manually, you will receive the refund late than those who have filed electronically. However, individuals who have income above Rs 5 lakh should file their tax returns online.

  1. Old bank account number

This is one of the more common reasons for the delay in refund. Many taxpayers forget to update the latest account number with the tax department following a change in jobs or salary accounts. If the income tax department is not updated with the latest bank account, there may be a delay in processing your income tax refund.

  1. Wrong address

Similarly, if the correct address is not updated, the refund is issued through cheque will be returned to CPC, if and if there is a change in mailing address.

  1. Erroneous deductions

if you have missed to include any deductions like those provided under sections 80c & 80D of the Income Tax Act, or any other sections that you wish to claim deduction under, there could be a delay & you may not be eligible for the same. Should the tax department finds any discrepancy in your return, rectification of the same may be needed. Check the return form to ensure that all deductions that you wish to claim are in place.

  1. Late filing of taxes

For obvious reasons, if there has a been a delay in filing taxes for a particular year from your side, a delay in getting your income tax refund can be expected. If you have filed your tax returns quite close to the last date, there can be a delay due to rush at the peak time and tax department may take time to process your request.

  1. Not verifying online

If you are sending manual copy of ITR-V to CPC Bangalore, it will take time to receive funds. One can opt for Electronic Verification Code (EVC) for quick verification of tax returns.

  1. Tax fraud

Lastly, owing to unusual circumstances like trying to commit tax fraud or evading taxes or any other criminally punishable offense could definitely result in a delayed refund and further prosecution.
