A Checklist for Your First International Trip

A Checklist for Your First International Trip
December 26, 2022

Everybody looks forward to taking a holiday, travelling with loved ones and exploring new destinations. Picking the destination for your next vacation can be exciting and challenging. If you’ve finally decided that you’d like to travel overseas, you’ve come to the right place. We’ve created the ultimate checklist to help you plan your first international trip.

Checklist for Your First International Trip

  • Check Your Passport Validity

If you don’t have a passport, you need to get one made. If you already have one, ensure it’s valid for at least six months from your travel date. Most countries will not allow you to travel on a passport that will expire in less than 180 days.

  • Understand the Visa Requirements

Once you’ve picked a destination, you must check whether you require a visa. Indians can enjoy travelling without visas or get visas on arrival in several holiday destinations. If you require a visa for your destination, ensure you give yourself enough time to apply. You may have to submit numerous documents, such as your Income Tax Returns, bank statements, flight tickets and hotel bookings, with your application. Always get your documents in order first to avoid unnecessary rejections.

  • Research the Local Culture

Ensure you do some research on the destination before travelling. Read reviews about hotels and tourist attractions before you make any bookings. You can find information about what’s polite in the culture and what’s considered impolite. Try and learn a few phrases in the local language and keep their guidelines and rules in mind while you’re there.

  • Get Insurance

Some countries will not issue visas if the traveller does not have a valid travel insurance policy. Irrespective of the requirements, you should get a plan to help you deal with flight delays, baggage loss or passport theft while in a foreign country.

  • Think About Money

Check the currency conversation rate and calculate how much you’ll need while you’re there. Cash remains the most convenient way to purchase items abroad, but you may need to exchange some money before you land. While airports have exchange counters, you may get a favourable rate at a local bank. Always ensure you’re carrying enough cash to deal with emergencies and to get back home safely.

  • Plan for All Scenarios

You may not want to think about it, but something could go awry during your holiday. If anything happens to you, your family might not have financial protection. A term plan like HDFC Life Click 2 Protect Super lets you look after your loved ones regardless of what happens. The policy lets you choose your coverage and offers the option to enhance it at crucial milestones like your marriage or your child's birth.

Preparing for your first trip abroad should fill you with excitement. With careful planning and this checklist, you’ll be ready to take off in no time.
