Important Financial Planning Lessons We Can Learn from Dussehra HDFC Life

Important Financial Planning Lessons We Can Learn from Dussehra HDFC Life
October 05, 2018

Traditionally, Dussehra is a festival that celebrates the success of good over evil. However, people often forget that its also a good time to introspect and renew our outlook on life. This year, as we get ready for the festival, lets take a look at how we can learn a few financial lessons from the celebration.

The Legend of Dussehra

According to Hindu mythology, on the day of Dussehra, which is also known as Vijayadashami, Lord Ram killed the evil Ravana. This was seen as a triumph of good over evil, and all across the country, effigies of Ravana are burned to mark the occasion.

What Can We Learn from the Festival?

By learning from the example of Lord Ram, we can lead a life that is financially safe and secure. Here are some of the important financial planning lessons that the festival of Dussehra teaches us:

  1. Start Afresh Dussehra is considered an auspicious time to begin a new venture or start a new chapter in our lives. This makes it the best time to start the process of getting our finances in order. We need to do our due diligence and think about the kind of investments wed like to make. Only once weve thought about all the pros and cons rationally, should we make a financial decision.
  2. Vanquish the Evil of Debt Now is the perfect time to reassess your financial standing and get rid of any debt, which can be considered an evil demon, trying to overturn our finances. By getting rid of bad spending habits, such as overusing our credit cards, we can work our way towards a financially secure future.
  3. Learn Discipline from Lord Ram Lord Ram lived his life by the principles of Dharma. He was always responsible and honest. We can take an example from the Lord and practice honesty and responsibility with our finances. We should always plan out our personal budgets, plan for future foals, and practice frugality when necessary.
  4. Be Your Own Protector What the story of Dussehra teaches us is that a saviour will come to help us whenever there is an evil on earth. When it comes to our finances, we need to be our own saviour. By purchasing an insurance plan, and coming up with sound investment plans, we can protect our financial future from all sorts of evils.

On this auspicious occasion of Dussehra, spend a little time on maintaining your financial health and wellbeing. Consider your future needs as well, and invest in smart tools such as Unit-Linked Insurance Plans (ULIPs). By taking a leaf out of Lord Rams book, we can become our own financial protector and live a financially secure life.
