Behind the Journey: Season 2 - Jasleen

"I invested money wisely to produce my tracks, relieve the pressure and focus on creativity"

People are born with several talents but seldom is their talent recognised and appreciated at an early age. Jasleen Kaur Royal's musical capabilities shone when she was merely 5 or 6 years old.

She became self-aware about her interest one evening, when while playing with her brother, she was eager to complete the melody which her brother wasn't being able to. Her curiosity to complete the melody shook her and somehow she finished it, despite the lack of understanding at a naïve age. This helped her family realise her inborn talent and this soon became a game amid the family circle, where they would suggest a random melody and she would play that on the keyboard.

The 'Din Shagna Da' singer who has become an icon for independent musicians in the country, couldn't have imagined the journey she has taken since her childhood in Ludhiana.

As a young musician with big dreams, Jasleen's goal was initially to earn enough to buy a Yamaha keyboard for herself. Soon she participated in a popular TV reality show and her talent received a lot of recognition, after which she started performing at gigs. Her first earning of Rs. 7,000 at a couple's anniversary party in Delhi was special, post which she was signed by an artist management agency and more work came her way. With busy schedules, Jasleen's dream and ambitions reached new heights, and she asked her manager to save the money made from those performances as she wanted to use the substantial sum for a special purpose. She made the best use of it by releasing her first single 'Pancchi ho jaavan' on YouTube. Jasleen recorded the song with the money she saved, and shot this as a zero-budget video. This song became popular among eminent names in the music industry, especially lyricist Swanand Kirkire, who kept the song as his caller tune for a long time.

However, the journey had just begun. Her continuous efforts of reaching out to many music directors brought success when Sneha Khanwalkar recognised her due to the single. Jasleen packed her bags and reached Mumbai, as she was offered her first song, which was her entry into Bollywood. This new journey she had embarked on helped her realise the importance of saving money in a prudent manner. She followed her instincts and used her savings to follow her passion – that of becoming a music entrepreneur!

In a few years, Jasleen has notched up several achievements to her credit – she writes, composes and sings as well. The 2013 hit Pancchi Ho Jaavan was followed by the soulful 2015 track from Baar Baar Dekho – Kho Gaye Hum Kahaan, and in 2016 came the even more popular track from Dear Zindagi – Love you Zindagi, which catapulted her into fans's hearts. She has composed and sung for Phillauri, Fukrey Returns, and Hichki, and crooned the self-composed track Jahaan Tu Chala in the 2019 hit, Gully Boy. Jasleen has often said that she finds negative criticism easier to handle than positive feedback. A similar attitude towards money has kept her grounded and kept her on her toes, financially as well as creatively.

Today, Jasleen has become one of the most successful and loved music directors in the country. Through her struggle, relentless efforts and the lessons learned, she keeps her worries away regarding the expenses only to focus thoroughly on her creativity. Just as Jasleen managed her finances from a young age, saving consistently and investing wisely, one can go the same route and realise one's dreams.
