In the Kurukshetra district of Haryana, most girls grow up hearing they have to prioritise household chores and responsibilities over everything else. They were rarely allowed to pursue a passion or wear anything but traditional clothes. One girl born in 1994 dared to be different. Today, everybody knows Rani Rampal. She famously took India’s women’s hockey team to the semi-finals in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. But, her road to Tokyo was not easy.

Rani’s family came from a humble background. Her father earned just Rs. 80 per day as a street vendor, while her mother worked as a house help. But nothing stopped Rani from chasing her dream. She represented India when she was 15 at the Women’s Hockey World Cup, winning the Best Young Player Award. She made her parents proud when she received her first salary of Rs. 500. They had never seen so much money before. That day, Rani promised herself to build her parents a house.

To fulfil her dream, Rani had to be as disciplined with her savings as she was with training. She saved and planned her finances to purchase a home and provide her parents with financial stability. Even today, Rani prioritises financial planning. She knows that sportspeople face injuries and retire early.
