Unit Linked Health Plan

A unit-linked health plan is a financial product that combines health insurance coverage with market-linked investment opportunities. In such a plan, a portion of the premium is used to provide medical protection against healthcare expenses. Whereas the remaining amount is invested in equity, debt, or hybrid funds based on the policyholder’s risk preference.

This type of health insurance with investment helps individuals achieve both financial security and long-term wealth creation through a single plan. It also offers the potential for fund value growth over time. This can suit salaried professionals, young families, and individuals seeking a balanced protection and investment plan.

What is a Unit Linked Health Plan?

Unit Linked Health Plan
July 21, 2026

A unit-linked health plan is a type of insurance product that combines health coverage with market-linked investments. In a unit-linked health insurance plan, one part of the premium is used to provide financial protection against medical expenses. The remaining amount is invested in equity, debt, or hybrid instruments.

The investment portion of the plan is measured through Net Asset Value (NAV), which represents the value of the selected fund units. Over the policy tenure, the fund value can increase or decrease depending on market performance.

The Indian life insurance market grew to $120.2 billion in 2025 and is expected to reach $269.1 billion by 2034. This reflects the growing preference for financial solutions that combine insurance coverage with investment opportunities.

Unlike standalone health insurance, which only provides medical coverage, a unit-linked health plan also focuses on long-term wealth creation. This dual structure makes it suitable for individuals seeking both healthcare protection and investment growth in a single financial solution.

How a Unit-Linked Health Plan Works

Here are the clear steps indicating how a unit-linked health insurance plan works:

Step 1: Premium Allocation

In these plans, the premium paid by the policyholder is divided into two parts. One portion provides health insurance coverage for medical expenses, while the remaining amount is invested in market-linked funds. This structure combines protection with long-term investment growth.

Step 2: Investment in Funds

The investment component is allocated to equity, debt, or hybrid funds depending on the individual’s risk appetite and financial goals. The value of these investments is measured by NAV, which changes with market performance.

Step 3: Charges and Benefits

Policy administration charges, fund management fees, and insurance costs are deducted from the investment amount, affecting overall returns. During the policy term, policyholders may receive medical claim benefits, make partial withdrawals from accumulated fund value, or receive a maturity payout if no major claims are made.

What are the Benefits of a Unit-Linked Health Plan?

A unit-linked health plan combines health insurance coverage with market-linked investment growth, making it a dual-benefit financial solution. Unlike traditional policies, this plan offers medical protection along with long-term wealth creation. This helps individuals balance healthcare security and future financial planning needs.

  1. Integrated Health Coverage and Investment

  2. This plan combines health insurance protection with a market-linked investment component in a single policy. Part of the premium covers hospitalisation, treatments, and other medical expenses, while the remaining amount is invested in selected funds to generate returns.

  3. Opportunity for Market-Linked Returns

  4. In a unit-linked health insurance plan, the investment portion can be allocated across equity, debt, or hybrid funds, depending on the investor’s preference. Returns are linked to market performance and the selected fund strategy. It offers higher long-term growth potential than traditional insurance plans, though returns are subject to market risk and not guaranteed.

  5. Flexible Premium Allocation and Fund Switching

  6. This plan allows policyholders to allocate investments across equity, debt, or hybrid funds based on their risk appetite. Most plans also provide fund-switching options during the policy tenure. This flexibility helps investors adjust their strategies in response to changing market conditions, financial goals, or risk preferences, while maintaining greater control over returns.

  7. Partial Withdrawal Facility for Emergencies

  8. Many unit-linked health plan options allow partial withdrawals after the mandatory lock-in period. This feature can help manage unexpected financial or medical emergencies without having to surrender the entire policy. However, withdrawals reduce the accumulated fund value and may affect long-term returns. Top-Up Investments for Wealth Accumulation

This type of plan may offer top-up investment options that allow policyholders to invest additional amounts beyond regular premiums. Additionally, top-ups support long-term wealth creation, subject to policy terms and conditions. These extra contributions can help increase the investment corpus over time, especially during favourable market conditions.

  9. Long-Term Financial Planning Advantage

  10. Regular contributions to a unit-linked health insurance plan encourage disciplined long-term investing while maintaining continuous health coverage. The lock-in period promotes long-term commitment and discourages premature withdrawals. Over time, staying invested for longer periods can improve the potential for wealth accumulation while supporting future healthcare and financial planning goals.

  11. Goal-Oriented Wealth Creation

  12. A unit-linked health plan helps policyholders align investments with specific long-term financial goals, such as future healthcare expenses, retirement planning, or family financial security. Fund selection, investment tenure, and risk profile play an important role in building the desired corpus. This combination of protection and investment supports goal-based financial planning within a single product.

  13. Tax Efficiency Under Applicable Sections

  14. Since the premiums paid by the policyholder in the Unit Linked Health Plans is bifurcated into two components. One portion that is allocated towards health insurance coverage, which may qualify for deduction under Section 126# of the Income Tax Act, 2025 (corresponding to Section 80D# of the Income-tax Act, 1961) subject to prescribed conditions and limits. However, where the plan also provides a death benefit component, the premium attributable to such benefit may qualify for deduction under Section 123# of the Income Tax Act, 2025(corresponding to Section 80C# of the Income Tax Act, 1961), subject to applicable conditions.

The maturity/partial withdrawals from the amount invested in market-linked funds for long-term wealth creation may be eligible for exemption only if the policy provides for the death benefit component, under Section 11# read with Schedule II of the Income Tax Act, 2025 (corresponding to Section 10(10D) # of the Income Tax Act, 1961), subject to the prescribed conditions and thresholds.

Case Example of Tax Efficiency Achieved

For example, Rohan purchases a unit-linked health plan in 2026 and pays an annual premium of ₹1.2 lakh. The portion of the premium allocated towards health insurance may qualify for deduction under Section 126 of the Income Tax Act, 2025, subject to prescribed conditions upto ₹25,000 for self. If the plan also provides a death benefit, the eligible portion of the premium may qualify for deduction under Section 123# of the Income Tax Act, 2025 for the complete amount of ₹1.2 lakh#.

Further, the proceeds from the market-linked investment component may be tax-free only if the policy provides for death benefit component under Section  11# read with Schedule II of the Income Tax Act, 2025, because his annual premium remained below ₹2.5 lakh. This allows him to combine health protection, investment growth, and tax savings within a single financial product.

What are the Features of Unit-Linked Health Plans To Know?

A unit-linked health plan includes several investment and insurance-related features that determine how the policy functions over the long term. Understanding these elements helps investors evaluate flexibility, transparency, costs, and growth potential before making a financial commitment.

  • Choice of Investment Funds (Equity, Debt, Hybrid)

  • A unit-linked health plan allows policyholders to choose between equity, debt, or hybrid funds depending on their risk appetite and financial objectives. Generally, equity funds offer higher growth potential with greater market risk, while debt funds provide relatively stable returns. Hybrid funds balance both approaches.

  • Lock-in Period and Policy Tenure

  • Most options require a lock-in period during which withdrawals are restricted. This structure encourages disciplined long-term investing and reduces premature exits. Policyholders can also choose different tenure options, with longer durations generally offering greater potential for market-linked growth through compounding.

  • Premium Payment Options

  • A plan may offer regular, limited, or single premium payment choices based on the investor’s convenience. Policyholders can usually select monthly, quarterly, or annual payment frequencies. Choosing the right payment structure can improve affordability while ensuring consistent long-term investment and uninterrupted health coverage.

  • Fund Value and NAV Transparency

  • The fund value represents the total accumulated investment linked to the policy. Net Asset Value (NAV) reflects the per-unit price of the selected fund and changes according to market performance. A unit-linked health insurance plan provides transparency by allowing policyholders to track NAV movements and monitor investment performance.

  • Policy Charges and Cost Structure

  • A unit-linked health plan includes charges such as premium allocation fees, fund management charges, policy administration costs, and mortality charges. These deductions are adjusted from the investment amount or fund value during the policy term. Knowing the cost structure is important because higher charges can affect long-term returns and overall policy performance.

Who Should Consider a Unit-Linked Health Plan?

A unit-linked health plan is suitable for individuals who want both health protection and long-term investment growth within a single financial product. According to recent reports, out-of-pocket health costs account for 39.4% of total health costs. This highlights the importance of choosing suitable health coverage alongside long-term financial planning.

The right fit depends on factors such as financial goals, risk tolerance, and investment horizon. This plan benefits those seeking flexibility, market participation, and future wealth creation alongside healthcare coverage.

  1. Individuals Looking for Health Cover with Returns

  2. Unit-linked health insurance is ideal for individuals who want medical coverage and investment growth, rather than purchasing separate products. It combines healthcare protection with wealth creation in one policy. It can suit those looking for additional value beyond traditional health insurance plans.

  3. Long-Term Investors with Financial Goals

  4. Individuals with long-term financial objectives may benefit from this plan because regular premium contributions and market exposure support gradual wealth accumulation. Staying invested for longer periods can improve growth potential through compounding. This can help build a financial corpus for future healthcare expenses, retirement planning, or other long-term life goals while maintaining health protection.

  5. People Comfortable with Market-Linked Risk

  6. A unit-linked health plan may suit investors who understand market fluctuations and are comfortable with investment-related risks. Since returns depend on market performance, gains are not guaranteed. Choosing the right fund type based on risk appetite is important for balancing potential returns and investment stability.

  7. Policyholders Seeking Flexibility and Control

  8. A unit-linked health insurance plan can benefit individuals who prefer greater control over their investments and financial planning decisions. Features such as fund switching, premium allocation, and flexible investment strategies allow customisation based on changing goals or market conditions.

How to Choose the Right Unit-Linked Health Plan

  • Evaluate Investment Benefits: Choosing the right unit-linked health insurance plan requires evaluating both the health insurance and investment aspects of the policy. Buyers should assess whether the medical coverage offered aligns with their healthcare needs and review the investment potential of the available funds.

  • Understand Financial Goals: Individuals should assess their financial goals, risk tolerance, and investment horizon before selecting equity, debt, or hybrid funds. Selecting funds aligned with financial objectives can help better balance risk and long-term return expectations.

  • Compare Fund Options and Flexibility: Comparing available fund options, historical fund performance, and flexibility features such as fund switching and top-up investments can help identify a plan that aligns with long-term financial goals and changing market conditions.

  • Review Charges and Policy Terms Carefully: Policy tenure, lock-in periods, policy charges, and withdrawal conditions should be reviewed carefully before making a decision. Understanding these elements helps evaluate liquidity, long-term affordability, and potential impact on returns.

Note: Policy tenure, lock-in periods, policy charges, and withdrawal rules should be checked carefully to ensure liquidity needs are met. Additionally, reviewing the insurer’s credibility, claim support, and policy terms helps ensure transparency and long-term reliability.

Charges and Risks Associated with Unit-Linked Health Plans

A unit-linked health insurance plan involves both investment-related costs and market-linked risks that influence long-term performance. Understanding these charges and risks is important for setting realistic return expectations. These factors directly affect fund value, investment growth, and overall financial outcomes over the policy tenure.

  • Types of Charges in ULIP-Based Health Plans

  • Such a plan may include premium allocation charges, fund management fees, policy administration costs, and mortality charges. The insurer makes these deductions either from the premium amount or the accumulated fund value at different stages of the policy.

Charges can vary across insurers and products. Moreover, higher costs can reduce the investment corpus and affect long-term returns.

  • Market Risks and Return Variability

  • Returns in a unit-linked health plan depend on market performance and are not guaranteed. Equity funds carry higher risk with greater growth potential, while debt funds are relatively stable. Hybrid funds balance both risk and return. Since fund value can fluctuate in the short term, this type of plan is usually more suitable for individuals with a longer investment horizon.

  • Impact of Charges on Fund Value

  • Regular deductions in a unit-linked health plan can gradually reduce the accumulated fund value. Even small charges can compound returns over the long term, especially during extended policy tenures. Comparing fee structures across different plans is important for understanding cost efficiency and balancing policy benefits with overall investment expenses.

FAQs on Unit-Linked Health Plans

  1. Are Unit-Linked Health Plans suitable for long-term financial planning?

  2. Yes, a unit-linked health plan can support long-term financial planning by combining healthcare protection with market-linked investment growth. Regular premium payments encourage disciplined investing, while the lock-in period promotes long-term commitment.

  3. How does a Unit Linked Health Plan differ from a standalone health insurance policy?

  4. A unit-linked health insurance combines health insurance coverage with an investment component linked to market-based funds. In contrast, standalone health insurance only covers medical expenses and does not offer investment growth or maturity benefits.

  5. Can I switch funds during the policy tenure?

  6. Most unit-linked health insurance plan options allow policyholders to switch between equity, debt, or hybrid funds during the policy tenure. This flexibility helps investors adjust their strategy according to market conditions, risk appetite, or financial goals.

  7. What happens to the fund value in case of the policyholder’s death?

  8. In a unit-linked health plan, the nominee generally receives the applicable death benefit as per the policy terms. This may include the accumulated fund value, the sum assured, or a combination of both, depending on the policy structure.

  9. Are there any tax implications on maturity or withdrawals?

  10. A unit-linked health plan may offer tax benefits on maturity proceeds attributable to the market-linked investment component under Section 11# read with Schedule II of the Income Tax Act, 2025, subject to the plan providing a death benefit component and fulfilment of the applicable conditions and tax regulations. Partial withdrawals after the lock-in period may also have specific tax implications depending on policy rules. If the said prescribed conditions are not fulfilled then the gains arising out of these will become taxable under the head of “Income from Capital Gains” at the rate of 12.5% for the gains exceeding ₹1.25 lakhs in a tax year. Reviewing taxation provisions is important for accurate long-term financial planning.
