6 Reasons Why We’re Grateful to Our Doctors

November 19, 2016

July 1st is National Doctors' Day, and in honour of the members of the medical profession who've been there for us always, we tell you the top reasons that will make you want to say thank you to your doctor right away:

1. Doctors help us live healthy, happy lives.

Medicine is aimed at helping us live longer. Doctors use their knowledge and experience to treat our illnesses and injuries. So the next time you visit your doctor, be sure to say thanks

2. Doctors lend a patient ear to our concerns.

Are you one of those patients who have already got preconceived notions about what is wrong with them and what they might do? A doctor, instead of getting annoyed, considers this your first step towards engagement, and is happy to see that you are concerned about your health. The doctor listens patiently when you tell them about your concerns for the visit, and then, if necessary, explains why your research isn't as relevant as you thought it might be.

3. Doctors let us know our treatment options.

When mulling a course of treatment, doctors let the patient know about the choices available to them. They provide relevant details to help patients weigh the risks and benefits of their treatment options, and then explain why the course they've recommended seems to make the most sense.

4. Doctors talk to us about how to stay healthy.

The best way to stay healthy is to live a healthy lifestyle. Doctors not only cure us of ailments and make us healthy, but they also teach us how to take care of ourhealth. They remind us to eat healthy foods and get plenty of exercise, and often, don't hesitate to recommend books, websites and newsletters to get us started.

5. Doctors recommend the best sources of information to help you learn more.

How often do we actually grasp what the doctor is saying? For many patients, a visit to the doctor's office is tinged with anxiety and fear. And then, when we are out the door, anything we understand goes out the door too. In such a scenario, the internet often becomes our guide for more information and answers. But unless we have a background in medicine, there is no way to verify the accuracy of the information out there. This is also where doctors come to our rescue, and recommend resources to help steer us in a better direction.

6.Doctors are available for emergencies.

A doctor's work schedule may also be unpredictable. For example, they may have to attend to a call for a patient who is confined to home due to illness or disability, or someone who has a severe broken bone or muscle injury in the middle of the night. Often, a doctor is needed immediately after an injury takes place, which can make their work hours irregular.

Does your doctor make sure that nothing falls through the cracks when it comes to your treatment and cure? What are you doing to supplement your doctor's efforts? You could get started by not just living healthy but also purchasing health insurance plans like HDFC Life Cancer Care and HDFC Life Easy Health insurance plans which protect you from unexpected and high medical costs.
