5 Bollywood films that teach us finances

5 Bollywood films that teach us finances
March 15, 2023

These Bollywood flicks have tips on personal finance for us

Family can be sometimes irritating and overbearing and we might share a bitter-sweet relationship with them. But there is no bond more affectionate than the one you share with your brother or sister.

Bollywood is a reflection of society and from time to time has captured the essence of sibling love in their movies. Apart from the fights and emotional bonding, these films also share financial takeaways that can come in handy while you discuss finances with your loved ones. Money can be a delicate matter and is probably the least discussed among siblings but definitely needs to be on your agenda. How about you use these films as an example and broach the topic with tact.

Here are our film picks and the financial lessons we can learn from each:

  • Dil Dhadakne Do

With the limelight on the dysfunctional Punjabi family, Dil Dhadakne Do focused on the brother-sister duo of Ayesha-Kabir Mehra. Irrespective of what's happening in their family, the siblings have got each other's back. There are financial lessons to learn from Ayesha who sells her jewellery to set up her own business and emerges as a self-made woman without borrowing money from family. Her supportive brother Kabir never shies away from acknowledging her achievement. Ayesha is an embodiment of an idealistic investor, who takes control of her finances, invests in her company, and makes a successful venture out of it.

  • Baghban

Baghban is a prime example of a lack of future planning for your golden years. Raj Malhotra - Pooja ensured that they fulfilled all the needs of their four sons, probably not leaving them with enough to save up for their retirement.

But we should halt for a minute and think about what the siblings could have done to provide a financial blanket to their parents. For the duo, their entire life revolved around their children. It is not surprising then that Raj gives away his lifelong earnings from Provident Fund and Gratuity to his sons.

In an idyllic world, the siblings should have taken the responsibility upon themselves to create a retirement investment portfolio from their father's final settlement package.

  • Hum Saath Saath Hain

If there is one film from the 90s that talks about sibling love, it has to be Hum Saath Saath Hain. Three sons are part of a business family, helmed by Ram Kishen and Mamta. When the time comes to lead the company, the mother gets insecure about giving the reins to the adopted eldest son. He is then asked to step down and make way for the biological sons. A takeaway from the film is that sibling relations can be thicker than water but you need to secure your future for unpredictable times. Job loss, physical disability after an accident, share market crash, no share in the inheritance, etc. can happen to anybody and we need to be prepared for the unfortunate times.

  • Bhaag Milkha Bhaag

One of the standout scenes in Bhaag Milkha Bhaag is the one when his sister Isri Kaur away gives her gold to fund Milkha's army enrolment. She is an epitome of love and sacrifice as she gives away the only piece of jewellery she could have kept back for a rainy day, to give wings to her brother's dreams. In real life, we rely on our siblings when the going gets tough and might hesitate to ask for monetary backing when we are financially broke.

Support your siblings and celebrate love between each other, what better way than sorting finances for them. You can let your siblings' dreams fly by investing in Savings and Investment plan by HDFC Life for them.
