This sample fund is our Balanced Life fund (available through Unit Linked Endowment & Young Star Plans), that we launched on the 2nd of January 2004.

In the above chart, there are two columns for every day since the 1st of January 2005 (one year after launch). These two columns represent the return achieved by the HDFC SL Fund and the return achieved by the Index for the year preceding that day.

The highlighted days are:

• The green columns show the return achieved by the HDFC SL fund.
• The red columns show the return achieved by the Index.

For example, using the highlighted days:

Point 1	Over the year from 29th February 2004 to 28th February 2005 the HDFC SL Fund has grown by 14.32% whilst the Index has grown by 9.57% during the same period
Point 2	Over the year from 19th March 2004 to 20th March 2005 the HDFC SL Fund has grown by 15.06% whilst the Index has grown by 12.21% during the same period

All other days are calculated the same way.

For a day where the green column is higher than the red column, HDFC SL has provided a better return than the Index over the preceding year. For a day where the green column is lower than the red column, HDFC SL has provided a lower return than the Index over the preceding year.
